Youth Climbing
Have fun, stay safe and climb with your kiddos at DYNO Detroit!
Youth Groups
At this time, we are not able to host organized youth groups such as birthday parties, school outings, scout troops, church groups, or similar events. For safety and capacity reasons, visiting parties with climbers under the age of 14 are limited to a maximum of six (6) youth climbers and must follow the supervision ratios listed below. We kindly ask that all guests respect these policies. They ensure a safe, enjoyable, and manageable climbing environment for every climber in our facility.

supervision
At DYNO Detroit, we require the following Adult-Child ratios.
- Ages 6 and under: 1:1 (1 adult to 1 child)
- The minimum age to climb at Dyno Detroit is 5 years old. Our activities are not designed for children younger than this.
- Children under the age of 5 are strongly discouraged from visiting the gym as it can be especially dangerous for them. If you have children younger than 5 who are not climbing, the supervision ratios still apply. This includes newborns, infants and toddlers.
- Ages 7 to 10: 1:2 (1 adult to 2 children)
- Ages 11 to 13: 1:3 (1 adult to 3 children)
- Ages 14+: Direct Adult Supervision not required, but it is STRONGLY encouraged to have an accountable adult in the building in case of emergencies.
Supervision ratios MUST be maintained on the ground at all times. If you plan on climbing, there must be enough adults in your party to meet the supervision ratios while you're on the wall.

Waivers
All minors must watch our orientation video and have a completed waiver by a parent or legal guardian. No one else can complete a waiver on behalf of a minor.
Be sure to select "Adult + # minors" to include one adult and all dependent children in a single document. Adults, even if not climbing, will be required to repeat the waiver if this step is missed.

Where do kids have the most fun with least risk?
Autobelays: We recommend youth climbers start here. Autobelays control the rope and lower climbers safely after a fall. After a brief training with staff, kids can climb up to 50 feet on any of our 10 autobelays, offering 20 routes from beginner to expert. Autobelays provide the most climbing with the lowest injury risk when a certified adult clips them in properly.
Bouldering: Rope-free climbing on shorter walls, most popular with teens and adults. Younger kids may enjoy it, but it’s often too difficult for those under 10 and puts them near falling adult climbers. We recommend bouldering only during quieter times and always with close, active supervision. We may restrict young children from bouldering during busy periods.
- Important: Treat the climbing pads like a busy street and falling climbers as cars. Active supervision within steps of assistance is critical to ensure safety for children and adult climbers above them.
Rope Climbing: For access to all our roped climbs, climbers ages 14+ can join our 90-minute Learn the Ropes class. After passing a Belay Check on your next visit, you’ll be able to belay (manage the rope) for others, even if they aren't certified.
